FOURTEEN

Concepts and Desires

Bryan

Today marks five months since Amy's accident. Every day, she seems stronger and more confident in herself. She always has her head buried in a book or surfing the Internet to learn as much as she can. The little things that we take for granted are the things she finds the most interesting. From her perspective, everything is new. She didn't know anything. I offered to teach her to drive but she declined. She says that she's not ready for that. She wants to know the ins and outs of vehicles before she attempts to learn to drive. She has been trying her hand at cooking. She's quite good at it. She has tried baking. Again, she's good at it. I've had to spend some extra time at the gym. It has been well worth it. Watching her take on her new life is impressive. I don't know that I would be so receptive to relearning everything. She has her moments of doubt and frustration. She gives herself a few minutes to wallow and moves on. Her strength and determination are inspiring. She inspires me to enjoy every single minute of my life, good or bad.

The coffee shop is busy today. Amy has been in that office all day. It's the end of the month and I know she's balancing the books and working on payroll. She's been doing an amazing job. I had to file taxes a month ago and my accountant was impressed by the state of my books. Not only was it quick, but she saved me a ton of money. Everything was organized and complete that filing the return was easy. My accountant didn't have to spend a lot of time looking for everything, hence saving me a lot of money. After much discussion, she agreed to the raise that I gave her. She insists that she's having fun, and this doesn't feel like a job. I'm happy about that, but it doesn't mean she can't be rewarded for a great job.

I haven't seen Amy all day and I miss her. I give her space when she's working but I need to see her. The need scares me sometimes, but I have decided to allow myself to feel this way. I've never felt this way about anyone and I like the feeling. She makes me happy. I make my way to the office and knock on the door. I hear say to come in and I open the door. She closes the notebook she's writing in when she sees it's me. That's weird.

"Hi." She says and tries to put the notebook in the drawer without making it obvious. It didn’t work.

"Let me see that." I say and put my hand out. She hesitates. "Is that a diary? Personal thoughts?"

"No." She whispers and looks away. She pulls out the notebook and places it in my outstretched hand. "It's just something I've been thinking about."

"I've seen you working in this notebook in your spare time. If it's personal, I won't look in it.
